Unit 3: The material world. Atoms.

INTRODUCTION TO THE UNIT.

How are we going to work in this unit?

ZONE 1: EXPLANATION

Take your own notes during the explanation.

ZONE 2: ACTIVITIES

For this unit you have to do the next activities in your notebook.

Book: Chemistry Oxford. (Pages 58 - 73)

- Activities: 2, 7, 10, 14, 15, 16, 20, 21, 29, 32, 33, 34, 36, 37, 38, 39.

- Continue with "read and understand science" on page 73.

- For finishing this unit, you have to complete the concept map on page 73 ("study skills") and the glossary proposal on the same page.

ZONE 3: COMPUTERS

We are going to investigate about the periodic table.

https://www.ptable.com/?lang=en

For this work you need to search the real uses or applications for the different elements of the periodic table. Each group will work in a different section of the table.

Group 1:  Alakali metals
Group 2: Alkaline earth metals
Group 3: Metalloids
Group 4: Non metals
Group 5: Noble gases
Group 6: Post - transition metals
Group 7: Transition metals (Group 1)
Group 8: Transition metals (Group 2)
Group 9: Transition metals (Group 3)
Group 10: Lantanoids
Group 11: Actinoids

Finally, you will use cardboards to write the element symbol, its atomic number and draw its application. Here you have an example:

Finally, we can build our own periodic table in pictures in our classroom.

EXTRA: A GAME FOR BUILDING ATOMS: Try it, is very interesting.

Applet "Build an Atom":
